Up To Now

Childrens Club

In the last term of 2002 we ran a kids club at Pacific Pines High School on Friday nights. The team was led by John and Hazel Walker, who had recently moved into the Coomera district.

John handed out brochures at the gates of primary schools in the Gaven/Pacific Pines area. We usually had about 40 kids attending. The program included lots of games, singing, stories, puppets and chocolate!

At this stage we don’t have the personnel with time and energy to run a kids program. At some point we may run a holiday program and rekindle a kids club. There is no shortage of children keen to attend!

Youth Ministry

A crucial part of Pacific Parks Uniting core values is the valuing of young people. Young people are able to take part in any of the small groups and worshipping communities, and are included in the decision-making processes of the congregation. Some have taken part in the Network Spiritual Gifts classes.

In 2003 and 2004 we ran a youth group for young people in grades 8, 9 & 10 at high school. A team of adults and teenagers oversaw and led the group. See Trip to Ignite, Film Quest and SpyGames for samples of our nights out. On Tuesday afternoons we’ve taken a small group through Alpha for Youth, Purpose Driven Life, and other discipleship resources. See the Alpha for Youth web site for an idea of what we’re doing.

Children and teenagers are part of our home meetings, taking part in discussion, activities, worship and of course eating together.

We have a connection with a Jubilee Primary School in Gaven, an ecumenical venture with Catholic Education, the Apostolic Church, the Anglican Church and the Uniting Church.

Inner Pieces Quilters Group

Quilting Group meeting on Wednesday nights

This group started in July 2002 in the home of Neva Jones. It’s in recess now that Neva’s moved to Adelaide. For your benefit, here’s the brief we began with….

The group gives us an opportunity to develop our creative skills and learn some new sewing techniques and most of all to make some beautiful items which we can display in our homes or use for gifts etc. Who knows what hidden talents we may discover!

The other great aspect of this group will be the opportunity to meet and make new friends and to be able to share in a meaningful way as we get to know each other better.

We are supported by Pacific Parks Uniting Church and part of the group’s regular activity will be a short talk and a prayer. There is no pressure on people to be a part of this.

You might be wondering about the name. Part of the philosophy of the group is to support each other and be ‘peace givers’ to each other as we quilt and ‘piece’. We can also find comfort and experience God’s ‘inner peace’ in our lives.

When we meet you can choose to continue working on a current project that you have started. Quilters often have UFO’s (unfinished objects) they want to complete. Alternatively you are welcome to start a new project and use some of my books to choose something you may like to make. If you are a beginner and don’t have a clue where to start, I am here to help you. For the first week, bring anything you already have with you to work on (it doesn’t have to be patchwork) and we can discuss if you wish to make something else.

Part of the philosophy of the group was not only to make items for ourselves, but also to be outward focused and to work on at least one community project each year, whereby we make and donate a quilt or quilts to a charity or a specific need. Each year the group decides to whom we donate.
